The United States will see a shortage of up to nearly 122,000 physicians by 2032 as demand for physicians continues to grow faster than supply, according to new data published by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). Additionally, many smaller and rural hospitals do not have the resources to hire specialists or their existing specialists are not able to provide 24/7 access.
With a shortage of physicians and an influx of patients, long wait times are common for specialized physician expertise in both inpatient and outpatient medical facilities. TeleSpecialists’ services help improve access for patients and allows healthcare providers and facilities to expand services by employing a panel of high-quality physicians available 24/7/365.
With an emphasis on value-based care across the nation, medical facilities are working to reduce the cost of care through increased efficiency, reduced travel times, fewer and shorter hospitalizations, and reduced readmissions. Having specialized physicians available via telemedicine saves time, travel and ultimately finances for both the medical facility and the patient.
Studies have repeatedly shown that the quality of care provided by telemedicine is comparable with a traditional in-person consultation, making telemedicine a cost-effective solution to health systems of all sizes. Our physicians are trained to “break the barrier” of the telemedicine screen and have a standard of high-quality care, often much quicker than a traditional in-person physician visit.
Superior patient satisfaction has been repeatedly demonstrated with telemedicine technology. The technology reduces travel time and related stress and uncertainty to the patient, waiting time for specialist consultation, and improved access to specialty and advanced care, otherwise not available.
TeleCare is a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based web application created to facilitate exceptional communication between TeleSpecialists’ in-house Rapid Response Center (RRC), the physicians on call, and its hospital partners. TeleCare controls the quality and speed when connecting hospital staff to the on-call physicians and allows the responding physician to capture and share consult timestamps, notes and orders. The proprietary TeleCare service is provided exclusively to our partner hospitals at no additional charge.
TeleCare allows a facility to see its patient cases in real-time. Hospital team members are set up with individual logins and customized permissions that allow hospital staff to access and view their facility’s data in TeleCare.
TeleCare also comes equipped with a functionality called eAlert. With the click of a button, a facility can notify TeleSpecialists of a patient needing to be seen. The RRC team receives the eAlert and notifies the physician on call, who can then beam into the facility’s telemedicine cart. By utilizing the eAlert notification, the facility can save precious time by activating emergent cases like a Stroke Alert without a phone call.
In addition to eAlerts, TeleCare offers clinical tools and operation workflow assessment tools giving the hospital’s team access to review, evaluate, and improve their telemedicine program. A Process Improvement workflow tool has been built into TeleCare to allow teams to perform a root cause analysis on individual cases or look at delay trends as a whole. TeleCare also allows hospital teams to view alteplase administration timelines (fishbone diagram), easily access and interpret case reviews and quickly reconcile billing each month.
TeleSpecialists’ Quality Team also monitors the quality metrics closely in TeleCare. Our Quality Program Specialists can assess outliers to quickly address issues. TeleSpecialists’ response times, at 4-5 minutes, are much quicker than the industry standard; however, we are always looking for ways to help our hospital partners improve workflow processes.
Our partnership to improve quality starts on day one – every facility is assigned a personal Quality Program Specialist to support Process Improvement initiatives that work with your hospital to obtain top-performing results.
